A driver falling asleep at the wheel of his vehicle was the cause of a two vehicle crash that occurred about 6:03 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 10, along SR443, two-tenths of a mile east of Dad Burnhams Rd., in Washington Township, Schuylkill County.

State police at Schuylkill Haven said Michael K. Meehan, 53, of Pottsville, was driving a 1996 Chevrolet Cavalier eastbound when he fell asleep. His vehicle drifted into the oncoming lane and struck the driver's side of a westbound 2003 Dodge Dakota driven by Joseph F. Tucci, 58, of Pottsville.

After impact the Cavalier traveled about four feet before coming to west and the Dakota continued another 50 feet after impact before leaving the road and spinning in a counter-clockwise manner, coming to rest on the berm.

Meehan sustained a minor injury and taken to the Schuylkill Medical Center-E. Norwegian St., Pottsville. Tucci was not hurt. Troopers said both vehicles had to be towed from the scene.

Troopers added that Meehan faces numerous citations.
