Elderly man dies in Schuylkill fire

An elderly Schuylkill County man died in a fire Thursday morning.

John P. Feeney, 69, of 1800-1802 Center St. (SR61), Ashland, died in the first floor apartment he occupied with his son, James Feeney, who was burned attempting to save his father. He was taken to the burn center at the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township, and is listed in stable condition.

The fire left a total of five persons homeless.

The blaze was reported about 9 a.m. and closed the busy state road for about two hours. Also left homeless was Susan McGurl and her four children. They were not injured in the fire.

State police Fire Marshal Trooper John Burns, of the Frackville barracks, is investigating. No cause has yet be determined.

Feeney's body was taken to the Schuylkill Medical Center - S. Jackson St., Pottsville, where an autopsy is scheduled for today by Dr. Richard P. Bindie, forensic pathologist.
