Smoke scare at Tamaqua apartment complex
ANDREW LEIBENGUTH/SPECIAL TO THE TIMES NEWS
Tamaqua emergency responders arrived within seconds Wednesday evening after an alert passerby called 911 to report smoke coming from an area of the 401 Apartment Building Complex located on Hazle Street. When firefighters and police arrived they searched the building for any signs of smoke or fire. Nothing was found. Some residents were asked to leave their apartments during the response. Some of the residents on scene said they smelled a strong odor that resembled "burning tires" that made them cough, but most stated they didn't see any smoke. One witness stated she saw something that looked like smoke coming from the lower garage level of the apartment building, but also pointed out it didn't last long. The Tamaqua fire, police, rescue squad, ambulance, and fire police all responded. There were no reports of injuries and the residents were allowed back in their apartments.
