Trick or treat night

Nesquehoning Mayor Tony Walck has declared Sunday, Oct. 31 will be the official Trick or Treat Night in Nesquehoning. Please have your porch light on if you plan to welcome the children to your door.

VFW ladies

The regular monthly meeting of Nesquehoning VFW Ladies Auxiliary was held on Sept. 14 with President Amanda Breiner in charge.

The Fall Conference was held Sept. 9-12. The Testimonial Banquet will be held for Department Commander Mastidge Oct. 23 in Philadelphia. Information was also received on the Cancer Insurance Program and the VFW National Home By Law changes.

Under membership, 16 of 75 have paid their 2011 dues. Dues are now payable.

A Miller bloodmobile collection was held at the post home Aug. 25 with four members donating blood. Information on the Voice of Democracy Program and Patriot's Pen will be distributed to the schools.

The District 20 meeting was held on Sept. 26 in Stroudsburg. Nesquehoning will host the meeting on Feb. 27, 2011.

Th annual Veterans Day Parade will be held in Palmerton on Sunday, Nov. 7. Cars will be available for those who would like to ride in the parade and the Buddy Queen.

The next meeting will be Tuesday, Oct. 12 at 6:30 p.m. at the post home.

Absentee ballots

An incorrect phone number was listed in Wednesday's column for Tony and Rose Walck. Anyone from Nesquehoning who needs an absentee ballot can contact the Walcks at (570) 645-7800, or Frank Jacobs at (570) 669-6647.

Golden Agers

The next meeting of the Panther Valley Golden Agers will be Monday, Oct. 11 at 1 p.m. The guest will be Geraldine Schaefer. Chorus practice is at 11 a.m.

Summit Hill

Shade Tree Commission

The Summit Hill Shade Tree Commission will conduct its annual fall street planting on Oct. 28-29. Any resident or business who would like a tree planted in front of their property can contact Lou Vermillion, (570) 645-9772, or John Kupec, 645-9644. Trees will be ordered in the near future. Volunteers to help with the plantings, watering and care of the trees are welcome.

Absentee voting

Borough residents who desire to vote by absentee ballot in the upcoming General Election can do so by applying for a ballot. There are two acceptable reasons for requesting an absentee ballot: out of the county and medical conditions that prohibit persons from going to the polls.

Anyone needing an application for an absentee ballot can contact Bill O'Gurek, (570) 645-4148.

St. Paul Lutheran

The blessing of animals will take place during the regular worship service at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Summit Hill, on Sunday, Oct. 10. The day will begin with Sunday school at 9 a.m., followed by worship at 10:30 a.m. Pet owners are asked to bring photographs of their pets to receive a special blessing for them.

St. Paul's will hold a special congregational meeting immediately following the worship service. All church members are encouraged to attend this meeting of importance.


Bloodmobile planned

St. Katharine Drexel Catholic Church, Lansford, will host a Miller-Keystone Blood Center bloodmobile on Monday, Oct. 11, in the church social hall.

The bloodmobile hours will be from noon to 6:30 p.m. Miller-Keystone serves all the area hospitals with blood complements.

Public rosary

The fourth annual public square rosary recitation will take place on Sunday, Oct. 16, beginning at noon at Kennedy Park in town. Those attending are asked to bring their own lawn chairs.

The event is being hosted by St. Katharine Drexel Catholic Church, Lansford, as part of the nationwide "America Needs Fatima" program.
