The Palmerton Area Library will be warm and cozy on Sunday, Oct. 10. It will be covered in beautiful quilts of every kind of colors and designs for its Fourth Annual Quilt Show from 12-4 p.m. There will be door prizes, vendors and a Chinese auction. A prize will be awarded for the Best of Show Quilt.

Terri Sheckler, coordinator of the Quilt Show, is inviting others to bring in their quilts for display.One of the featured antique quilts at the show belongs to Marguerite Heydt of Palmerton. It is a 70-year-old flower garden design, 82" by 84". The top was put together by Mrs. El Shupp of Albrightsville. Marguerite Heydt of Palmerton paid $1.50 for the top and then paid $9 for it to be quilted by the ladies of the Trinity Lutheran Church of Palmerton.Marguerite, a quilter herself, remembers her mother, Lizzie Shupp, making quilts and being one of the leaders of Trinity's quilting bee. Marguerite didn't begin quilting until after she married Gordon Heydt in 1939. A year later she started quilting for something to do and says when they got married, they started out with nothing and they needed the bedding.She has made over 50 quilts, many of them embroidered. She made five the year her late husband was very ill, stitching away as she sat by his side. She gave most of her quilts away as graduation and wedding presents.Raising two sons, Marguerite also worked at the Regent Meat Market for 42 years. She retired at 62. A year later, her sister, Alice Arner, a quilter at Trinity, told her to get down there and start quilting with them.The group is called the Rev. Erb Class. Marguerite doesn't know why it's called that. They're located in back of the church's thrift shop and says it is a great way to learn all the news and meet people who come in to see what they're working on.Now at 94 years old with failing eyesight, she says she's ready to retire from quilting."It's just getting too hard to make those tiny stitches."But she loves the art."It's a past time and when you're finished you have something to show for it. And they make wonderful gifts."She is pleased that out of her nine grandchildren, her granddaughter, Krista Heydt is carrying on the quilting tradition.Marguerite will be displaying another quilt she and her mother made together.
