Controller meets deadline on audit

Published October 04. 2010 05:00PM

The court deadline was met.

Schuylkill County Controller Melinda Kantner filed in the prothonotary's office at the courthouse in Pottsville Friday afternoon the annual audit on county spending for 2009 and also dropped off at the post office in Pottsville a similar report to Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) as required under the county code.

The deadline for the report was July 1 but Kantner had a problem with the auditor hired by the county commissioners who has to prepare a single report on the financial expenditures of the county. The squable between Kantner and the auditor, Samuel Deegan, reached a point where the commissioners had to file an action in mandamus in the county court to get the audit finshed.

Kantner twice was denied by the county court for an extension of time although the court granted the former controller, Gary Hornberger, an extension when he requested. Finally Judge Charles M. Miller, after a conference in his chambers, later produced an order directing Kantner to file by Oct. 1.

Deegan expects to have his report ready in a couple of weeks.
