Mr. and Mrs. Alexander Sommers of Summit Hill recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. They were married by the late Monsignor Francis Haley at St. Joseph's Church in Summit Hill on Sept. 24, 1960.

Mrs. Sommers is the former Elizabeth "Liz" Matta, daughter of the late Joseph and Jean Matta of Lansford. Her husband is the son of the late Patsy and Katie Sommers of Summit Hill.The couple has three children: Alex Sommers and his girlfriend, Susan, of Summit Hill; Jeremy Sommers, also of Summit Hill; and Patricia Sommers of Schwenksville.They have one grandchild, Nickolas Allesch of Coaldale.In honor of their special day, their children and Susan surprised them with a party on Sept. 25, and a trip to Florida. Carol (Harvan) Griffits, formerly of Lansford and a bridesmaid in their wedding, traveled from Lititz, Pa. to surprise them as well.The Sommers also celebrated the occasion by renewing their vows with the Rev. James Burdess of St. Joseph's Church on Sept. 25.The following day they renewed their vows at The Cathedral of St. Catherine of Siena in Allentown, with the Most Rev. John Barres, Bishop of Allentown, officiating.
