Thunderstorm knocks out power in several areas

Published November 17. 2010 05:00PM

A thunderstorm slammed through the area early this morning, knocking out power to hundreds of PPL electric customers in Schuylkill County and nine in Carbon County.

Electric provider PPL has been in a storm emergency since 10 p.m. Tuesday. "We had some bad weather - high winds and rain - that came through," said PPL spokeswoman Kathy Frazier.

As of 7 a.m. today, 66 PPL customers in West Penn Township and 314 in Pine Grove remained without power. In Carbon County, three customers were out in Franklin Township and nine in Mahoning.

The numbers of power outages could rise sharply today as high winds whistle through the region.

The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory through 8 p.m. today for Berks; Bucks; Carbon; Chester; Delaware; Lehigh; Monroe; Montgomery; Northampton; Philadelphia and through 6 p.m. for Adams; Bedford; Blair; Cambria; Cameron; Centre; Clearfield; Clinton; Columbia; Cumberland; Dauphin; Elk; Franklin; Fulton; Huntingdon; Juniata; Lancaster; Lebanon; Lycoming; McKean; Mifflin; Montour; Northern Centre; Northern Clinton; Northern Lycoming; Northumberland; Perry; Potter; Schuylkill; Snyder; Somerset; Southern Centre; Southern Clinton; Southern Lycoming; Sullivan; Tioga; Union; Warren; York counties.

The advisory was issued because NWS expects sustained winds of 15 to 30 mph and wind gusts of 45 to 55 mph. The winds will increase through the morning hours and be the strongest into the afternoon, then diminishing later this evening. Strong wind gusts could make driving difficult, knock down tree limbs and dislodge loose outdoor objects.
