Advance Auto Parts employees grant Parryville woman's dream

Riding in a limousine had always been a dream of Mary Sherer of Parryville.

Thanks to her co-workers at Advance Auto Parts, Lehighton, that dream came true for Mary on Saturday night. Her co-workers at Advance Auto Parts chipped together the funds for a limousine ride, plus the cost of two tickets to the Ryan Pelton "Elvis impersonator" show at Penn's Peak. When the limousine stopped in front of her house, Mary's face was filled with joy."We also have four hours to ride around before the show starts," said Sherer.Never one to think only of herself, she decided that she and her husband, Lamont, would have dinner at a Boy Scout benefit spaghetti supper in Sciota and invited her son, Cory, daughter-in-law, Sarah; and her three grandchildren to ride along."I was so surprised when they told me," she said. "I couldn't sleep all night thinking about it."To see her off on the adventure was Pam Shoenberger, commercial sales manager at Advance Auto Parts, Lehighton. She says that Sherer of Parryville is her best driver and when Mary was diagnosed with lung cancer she knew she would support her in her battle. Sherer delivered for Advance Auto Parts for the past nine years.Last month, Shoenberger organized a Marypalooza event for her friend and employee at the Big Creek Grange Hall. The event raised $3,445 to help with Mary's medical expenses. On June 13 Sherer went to the Palmerton Hospital emergency room because she had unbearable back pain for several days and thought it was her gall bladder. Instead, an x-ray and CT scan showed she had three tumors, one in a lung, one between her lungs and another in her back, plus cancer cells were found in her lymph nodes.Mary has had chemotherapy treatments, which have made her violently ill, but she plans to fight the disease. She has been on a medical sick leave since she was diagnosed with lung cancer."When I started at Advance Auto Parts, they asked if there was something I always wanted to do, and my wish was to ride in a limousine someday. Today it came true."
