Jim Thorpe fire ruled an arson
Arson is listed as the cause of a fire, which broke out in a vacant factory building in Jim Thorpe Friday morning.
The fire occurred at the Old Silk Mill on Silk Street, near East Fifth Street, at about 5:45 a.m.
Upon arrival of police and firefighters, fire was discovered on the second floor of the building.
The flames were extinguished quickly by the Jim Thorpe Fire Department.
A state police fire marshal assisted local officials with the investigation.
"Through investigation it was determined that the fire was intentionally set," Chief of Police Joseph Schatz said.
He and Patrolman Carelli, the investigating officer with the Jim Thorpe Police Department, requested that anyone with information contact the Jim Thorpe Police Department at (570) 325-4995. All calls will remain confidential.
About a half dozen fire departments were dispatched to the scene because of the large size of the building.
When Jim Thorpe fire personnel arrived, smoke was coming out the sides of the building.
Besides the Jim Thorpe Fire Department, also dispatched were volunteers from Lehighton, Nesquehoning, Mahoning Township, and Franklin Township. The RIT (rapid intervention team) of Lansford Fire Department also responded along with the Lehighton Ambulance.
Some fire department personnel remained at the scene until about 10 a.m.
There were no reported injuries.
