One week to go

Published November 04. 2010 05:00PM

With just one week remaining in the regular season, as many as five TIMES NEWS area teams could still qualify for postseason play.

Northern Lehigh and Pleasant Valley already have spots in the District 11 playoffs secured.

With a win over Palmerton on Friday night, the Bulldogs will be the No. 1 seed in the four-team Class AA field. Even with a loss, they will be either the No. 1 or No. 2 seed, which means that they are guaranteed a home playoff game next weekend.

The Bears are currently ranked second in the eight-team Class AAAA field. Pleasant Valley can finish no worse than fourth, which means they have also secured a home game for the opening round of the District 11 playoffs.

Jim Thorpe is the final area team that is guaranteed a postseason berth, but unlike Northern Lehigh and Pleasant Valley, the Olympians still don't know if they will be in the District 11 playoffs or the Eastern Conference playoffs.

Thorpe currently trails Pine Grove by 20 points in the race for the fourth and final D-11 Class AA berth. The Olympians will need a win over Lehighton and a Pine Grove loss to powerful Line Mountain to qualify.

If Jim Thorpe fails to make Districts, it will be in the Eastern Conference Division II playoffs.

Two other area teams Northwestern and Lehighton are on the Eastern Conference playoff bubble.

The Tigers need to beat Catasauqua on Friday to earn a spot in the Division II playoffs. They would be unlikely to get a berth if they lose to the Rough Riders.

The Indians will need to defeat Jim Thorpe and have three other results go their way to qualify for the EC Division III playoffs.

With the 2010 campaign winding down, OVERTIME is highlighting several impressive season totals. Included among them are receiving, scoring and passing numbers that are among the best in several decades.

MAKING HIS POINTS … Cody Remaley scored four more touchdowns in Northern Lehigh's 49-7 victory over Catasauqua on Friday night. That brings his total to 180 points this season.

It is the second straight season that Remaley has scored at least 180 points. A year ago, he scored 186 points.

Only two other players since 1971 have scored at least that many points in a season.

Northwestern's Brett Snyder scored 202 points during the 1995 season and Marian's Mike Tracy scored 184 points in 1980.

FLINGIN' IT … Two area quarterbacks reached the 20 touchdown pass mark in games last week.

Lehighton's Josh Agosto passed for three scores in a win over East Stroudsburg North to run his season total to 21 and Pleasant Valley's Derrik Walling had a pair of TD passes against Pocono Mountain East to move his season total to 20.

Only five other times since 1987 has an area quarterback thrown for 20 or more touchdowns.

The other quarterbacks to achieve that were:

* Jim Thorpe's Corey Cinicola (27) in 2008

* Panther Valley's Cazzie Kosciolek (25) in 1992

* Jim Thorpe's Corey Cinicola (24) in 2007

* Panther Valley's Casey Lawrence (21) in 2009

* Lehighton's Brandon Williams (21) in 2007

BEAR PAIR … Pleasant Valley's Rob Getz (38 catches) and Rich Irving (37) are just the fourth set of teammates over the past 20 years to each catch at least 35 passes in a season, and the first one since 2000 to do it.

Getz and Irving are now part of an elite list that includes:

* Jim Thorpe's Michael Cody (40) and Don Evans (37) in 2000

* Tamaqua's Vince Boyer (51) and Noel Powell (37) in 1998

* Panther Valley's Brad Miller (70) and Fenton Black (68) in 1992

SPREADING THE WEALTH … Palmerton may not be leading the area in any offensive categories this season, but there is one thing the Blue Bombers have accomplished unique to other teams.

Paul McArdle's club has scored 25 touchdowns this season but have done so with 12 different players. No other area club has had as many individuals reach the end zone this season. The next closest to Palmerton are Lehighton and Pleasant Valley, who have both had 10 different players score touchdowns this season.

Last year, Panther Valley topped TN area teams with 14 different players scoring TDs.
