Compost workshop

The Penn State Master Gardeners of Schuylkill County will conduct a composting workshop on June 16, from 6-8 p.m., at Sweet Arrow Lake Clubhouse. All Schuylkill County residents are eligible to attend. Pre-composting bins will be available for those who pre-register before June 9. Seating is limited.

The workshop offers tips on turning old leaves and yard trimmings into rich, dark compost.

GED graduates

Schuylkill County adults who earned their GED diploma during the 2009-2010 school year are welcome to participate in the annual Adult GED Commencement Ceremony on June 17. Graduation ceremonies will be held at the Schuylkill Technology Center's North Campus, Frackville, beginning at 7 p.m.

The ceremony will be a traditional one, complete with caps and gowns.

Soccer clinic

Athletes for Christ will offer an indoor soccer clinic, for children between the ages of 6-9, at Bethany Evangelical Congregational Church, 223 E. Broad St. The clinic will be held from June 7-June 28, Mondays, from 4:30-5:30 p.m.

Bethany EC

The Rev. Kevin Roberts will officiate at the 10:30 a.m. service this Sunday in Bethany Evangelical Congregational Church. Nursery care is provided. Sunday school for all ages is held at 9:30 a.m.

Also on Sunday, worship services will be held at the Hometown Nursing Center at 2:30 p.m. and at the Tamaqua ABC Hi Rise at 6 p.m.

Activities for next week will include: Tuesday, prayer time at 8:30 a.m.; Wednesday, TYM Praise Event at 6:30 p.m.; Friday, Couple's Bible study at 7 p.m.; Saturday, MIA event at 8:30 a.m.


An American Red Cross Bloodmobile will be held in Tamaqua on May 26. The social hall of St. John United Church of Christ, Pine and Biddle streets, will serve as the collection site. Hours will be from 1 to 6 p.m.

Anyone 17 or older, who weighs at least 110 pounds and is in general good health is eligible to donate blood.

This visit is being sponsored by Bittner's General Store, Tamaqua.

St. Peter's Union

The Rev. Rodney Wells will officiate at the 9 a.m. worship service this Sunday in St. Peter's Union Church, Mantzville. The service will include the Rite of Confirmation and Reaffirmation of Baptism as well as the celebration of Holy Communion. Sunday school classes meet at 10:15 a.m.

Also on Sunday, the Cub Scouts will meet at 4 p.m.

Activities for next week will include: Monday, Girl Scouts meet at 6 p.m.; Wednesday, Preschool graduation, four-year-olds, at 7 p.m.; Thursday, Preschool Moving Up ceremony for 3-year-olds at 10 a.m., Brownies meet at 6:30 p.m., Senior Choir rehearsal at 7 p.m.

Primitive Methodist

The Rev. Rodney Hall will officiate at the 10:45 a.m. worship service this Sunday in Primitive Methodist Church. A children's sermon will be included.

Sunday school for all ages begins at 9:30 a.m.

First Steps, a support group for mothers with young children, meets the first Tuesday of every month, at 6 p.m., at Primitive Methodist Church.

On Father's Day, June 20, morning services will not be held in lieu of participation in Tamaqua's Summerfest event. Instead, an informal dinner will be held at 6 p.m. on June 19, followed by a time of worship.
