Carbon Animal Response Team looking for members

Published May 03. 2010 05:00PM

Carbon County's Animal Response Team is looking for new members.

During the volunteer organization's recent meeting, the group spoke about the need to educate the public about the group, as well as build its membership.

Donna Crum, CART coordinator, said that anyone interested in helping animals during emergency situations should visit a meeting and see what CART is all about.

Some of the goals CART strives toward is to decrease the threat to humans and animals, prevent and decrease the spread of diseases, and minimize the economic impact of animal emergencies.

She also urges past and current volunteers to attend the meetings.

The schedule for the group's upcoming meetings are May 24, June 16, July 27, and Aug. 26, starting at 6:30 p.m., at the Carbon County Emergency Management Agency in Nesquehoning.

To become a member of CART, visit the state Web site http://pasart.us/ and click on "Become a Volunteer." All volunteers must submit a criminal background check to Crum.

In related matters, the CART team is currently working to start a campaign to raise funds to purchase pet oxygen masks for ambulances throughout the county.

These reusable masks would allow emergency personnel with the equipment needed to treat animals that are in need of medical treatment.

The group is also in need of a large animal sling or tripod, which would be used during horse or other large animal rescues.

To donate to CART, contact Crum at (610) 826-4901 and leave a message or call Pat Bach, CART treasurer, at (570) 722-0488.
