Three firefighters charged with setting nine fires

Three members of a Schuylkill County fire company have been charged with setting nine arson fires over a four month period in the county.

State police at Schuylkill Haven have charged Shawn Hoy, 21, of Pine Grove, John Eichert, 21, of Orwigsburg, and Matthew Dixon, 18, of Friedensburg, with setting nine fires that occurred in Washington, Wayne, West and East Brunswick townships over a period of time from Sept. 30, 2009, to Jan. 23. Additionally, Hoy was charged in connection with a fire in January 2007.

All three were members of the Friedensburg Fire Company at the time the fires were set, troopers said.

Troopers said on March 30 the Troop L Major Case Team obtained information related to these fires which resulted in the arrest of the three suspecdts. The investigation is continuing.

Troopers said throughout the past several months the command staff of the Friedensburg Fire Company assisted state police in the investigation and have cooperated fully with any and all requests made by the major case team.

Hoy was charged with 10 counts of arson along with conspiracy to committ arson, criminal mischief and recklessly endangering; Eichert was charged with five counts of arson and the other counts; and Dixon was charged with one count of arson and the other counts.

Troopers said Orwigsburg police assisted in the arrest of Hoy.
