The "door" prize

Published March 12. 2010 05:00PM

Mrs. Smith, Learning Support teacher for K-5, at Towamensing Elementary School, and a few of her students, left to right, Allison Haydt, Austin Costenbader, Makayla Fenner, Taylor Weaver, Chucky Burke, admire their handiwork which won them first prize in the Door Contest held during Read Across America week. They based their design on a favorite book they read, "Chinatown" by William Low with the look of pagodas, Chinese lanterns, dragons and pictures of themselves dressed in a kimono and straw hat. For their win, Mrs. Smith's classroom will receive an ice cream party from the PTO. The judges, Mrs. Boyce, Mr. Congdin and Mrs. Vignone, had such a hard time picking one winner out of so many wonderful entries, they gave two more awards for runner ups to Mrs. Morgan's 6th grade class for their "Cat in the Hat" door and to Mrs. Calpas and Mrs. Hard's 3rd grades' shared entry of "The Sneetches" by Dr. Seuss. They will also receive treats from the PTO.
