HARRISBURG - The Department of Environmental Protection cited 32 garbage trucks for operational and safety violations during recent trashnet inspections at the IESI Landfill in Lower Saucon Township, Northampton County, and the CES Landfill in Foster and Porter townships, Schuylkill County.

DEP, in conjunction with the state police and its Motor Carrier Enforcement personnel, conducted the inspections June 2 at CES Landfill and June 3 at IESI Landfill. The violations were against the haulers, not the landfills.

"These inspections improve safety on the roads in Pennsylvania and keep waste haulers in compliance with environmental regulations," said Michael Bedrin, Northeast Regional Director.

DEP staff inspected 180 trucks June 2 at the CES Landfill and found 21 trucks that had a total of 21 violations. Six trucks were leaking; three trucks had no Act 90 waste hauling authorizations; one truck had improper identification; seven trucks had no signs; one truck had incomplete signage; one truck had no fire extinguisher; one truck had a discharged fire extinguisher; and one truck had an improper enclosure. Two verbal warnings and 19 notices of violation were issued.

On June 3, DEP inspected 66 trucks at the IESI Landfill and found 11 trucks with a total of 18 violations. Three trucks were leaking; one truck had no Act 90 waste hauling authorization; six trucks had no signs; one truck had no fire extinguisher; one truck had an improper enclosure; and six trucks had no residual waste preparedness, prevention and contingency plans. The department issued 15 summary citations that will be heard at the local magistrate and nine notices of violation.
