Ames challenged for GOP chairmanship in Schuylkill
Robert Ames, of Coaldale, who has been active in the Schuylkill County GOP Party for 38 years, and keeping it together during some lean years, has suddenly received opposition.
In 2007, Ames succeeded Daniel Daub, of Tower City, who resigned as chairman after a disastrous election in which the party lost the majority of offices in the courthouse.
The county GOP committee, which meets every two years to elect a chairman, will meet Saturday morning at 10 a.m. at Schoeneman's Auditorium, SR61, Pottsville, to elect its officers.
Joseph D. Stearns, of Deer Lake, who holds no political title but works as a political consultant, announced he will seek the chairmanship. Stearns has been associated with a conservative group which seeks many changes.
The current officers are Ames, chairman; Mary Labert, McAdoo, vice chairperson; Micah Gursky, Tamaqua; Howard Merrick, Pottsville; Adam Pancake, Pine Grove; and Donald Metzinger, Ashland, district vice chairmen; Phyllis Hesser, Pine Grove, secretary; and Norman Rettig, treasurer.
The committee will also vote to endorse Republican candidates who won in the primary election.
