Ten defendants set for trial change minds and enter pleas
Ten people who face criminal charges had a change of heart when their cases were called for trial by changing their pleas to guilty before Judge Charles M. Miller in Schuylkill County court.
Miller accepted the pleas and directed the defendants and their counsel appear before him on Monday, July 19, at 9:30 a.m. for sentencing. The judge also ordered the adult probation department prepare a pre-sentence investigative report on each defendant to be completed prior to the sentencing.
Those changing their pleas were:
Brian A. Briksza, 27, Shenandoah, pleaded guilty to possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia and delivery of drugs in Shenandoah on Jan. 21, 2009. He was cited by the Schuylkill County Drug Task Force.
Brian Anthony Cyr, 21, Shenandoah, pleaded guilty to possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia and delivery of drugs in Shenandoah on July 1, 2008. He also was cited by the county drug task force.
Joseph Gavalis, 46, Ashland, pleaded guilty to violating the state's public welfare code by receiving $994 in food stamps and $682.66 in cash which he was not entitled. Gavalis wa cited by the State Inspector General's Office.
Nadine Marie Mason, 27, Schuylkill Haven, pleaded guilty to two counts of assault on two Pottsville policemen, two counts of disorderly conduct and one count of public drunkenness. Mason was cited by Patrolman Joseph R. Welsh, one of the victims, and the second victim was Patrolman Brian Kotzmoyer.
Jason J. Pesavage, 31, Upper Shaft, Shenandoah, pleaded guilty to burglary of a home at 401-403 W. Oak St. on Nov. 1, 2007, criminal conspiracy, criminal trespass, theft and receiving stolen property. He was cited by former Chief Matthew Nestor, Shenandoah police.
Edward J. Polusky III, 21, Mahanoy City, pleaded guilty to criminal trespass on property at 235 W. Mahanoy Ave. and theft of copper pipe, wire cable and hand saw. He was cited by Patrolman George Parnell, Mahanoy City police, last Aug. 16.
William Albert Pytak, 25, Harrisburg, pleaded guilty to unauthorized use of a vehicle of Marie Clark, West Mahanoy Township, criminal mischief and failing to have a valid driver's license. Pytak was cited by Patrolman Shawn Tray, West Mahanoy Township police, on Sept. 28, 2008.
Michael David Schultz Jr., 28, Pottsville, pleaded guilty to possession of drug paraphernalia in his home. He was cited by Patrolman Brian W. Kotzmoyer, Pottsville police, last Dec. 12.
Ryan Scott Winkler, 30, Schuylkill Haven, pleaded guilty to criminal trespass into a garage at 114 E. Liberty St. and criminal mischief. Winkler was cited by Patrolman David George, Schuylkill Haven police, last May 14.
Clement Michael Schropp, 60, Mahanoy City, pleaded guilty to fleeing police, driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol, a habitual offender of the motor vehicle code, resisting arrest, driving an unregistered vehicle, failing to have a valid driver's license, driving while his license was suspended, driving upon the sidewalk on Centre Street in Mahanoy City, careless driving and having faulty lighting equipment on his vehicle. Schropp was cited by Lt. John Kaczmarczyk, Mahanoy City police, last Oct. 8.
