Work on Route 209 resurfacing project to begin on Monday

Published June 03. 2010 05:00PM

The massive resurfacing project on SR209 between Lehighton and Jim Thorpe will shift into full gear on Monday.

The project, which costs $1,710,782, is being paid with federal stimulus funds.

Lehighton Borough manager John C. Wagner said a pre-construction meeting involving himself, PennDOT officials, and the contractor occurred yesterday.

He said work will begin at the Mansion House Hill in Jim Thorpe on Monday.

Work in Lehighton borough is expected to begin June 9-11, said Wagner, depending upon progress made on the Mansion House Hill portion of the project.

"In consideration of the preponderancy of residents on North First Street, work from the northern borough limit to North Street will be daytime work," Wagner said.

"In consideration of the number of businesses on South First Street, work from North Street to Bridge Street will be accomplished during the nighttime hours."

No detour will be necessary for the work, said Wagner.

Originally, the contractor had proposed making Sgt. Stanley Hoffman Boulevard a two-way street while work was done on First Street.

Lehighton Borough Council members opposed this and suggested that if traffic is to be detoured, it would be on Second Street.

Wagner said the contractor informed him that he "is comfortable working on one-half of the roadway at a time, and allowing a single lane of traffic on First Street."

Parking will be prohibited along those portions of First Street where active work is occurring.

Wagner said this will be a "rolling" no parking zone, depending upon the contractor's progress. He said towing will occur to cars parked in "no parking" areas.

The project encompasses four miles between the Thomas J. McCall Memorial Bridge in Lehighton and Susquehanna Street in Jim Thorpe.
