East Penn Elementary School recently held its first outdoor Memorial Day service with all students at the school taking part in the program.

Speaker was Larry Hill, a former Lehighton Area School District elementary teacher. Hill spoke about the need for students to know the meaning of Memorial Day and the need to remember the soldiers who died for our freedom.Hill said that the men who sacrificed their lives were at one time children who grew up to have dreams that could not happen.The children observed Memorial Day by offering songs, poems and readings.Kindergarten sang, "You're A Grand Old Flag," and first grade sand "Flags Will Fly." Second grade sang, "This Land I Your Land," and fourth grade sang the songs of the Armed Forces.McKena Christman provided the history of Memorial Day and Emily Miller read her essay, "Memorial Day.Brandon Schnell read the poem, "The Unknown Soldier." Jenna Berry presented the wreath placed at the flagpole.Hallie Brosky read the origin of "Taps."The color guard was provided by the United Veterans Organization of Lehighton.
