Charged with forgery in Tamaqua

Jose Luis Santiago, 38, of 701 E. Ridge St., Lansford, center, was apprehended by Tamaqua Police Cpl. Henry Woods last week and charged in connection with a forgery committed at the We R Cigarettes store, Mauch Chunk Street, on April 1. Santiago is seen being escorted to his arraignment by Cpl. Woods and Tamaqua Patrolman Michael Hobbs. He was charged with two felony counts of forgery, two felony counts to commit forgery, theft by deception, conspiracy to commit theft by deception and receiving stolen property. Santiago allegedly presented a Social Security check in the name of George Anthony to be cashed, claiming to be Anthony. Store owner Edward Paperman cashed the check after Tamaqua resident Jessica Ann Rudy vouched for Santiago. District Judge Stephen Bayer, Tamaqua, set bail at 10 percent of $15,000. Unable to post bail, Santiago was incarcerated in the Schuylkill County Prison, Pottsville.
