Updike honored for state title

Allison Updike of Tamaqua Area High School was honored by State Representative Jerry Knowles (R-124) for her outstanding performance in the javelin during the PIAA State Track and Field Championships at Shippensburg University in May. Updike won the Class AA gold medal with a throw of 161 feet, two inches. Updike also won the title at the U.S. Junior Nationals in Des Moines, Iowa, last month, tying the Pa. State record with a throw of 167 feet, two inches. She has qualified as a member of the US Junior National Team to compete in the Junior World Championships in Moncton, Canada, this month. Knowles (right) presented Updike with a citation from the General Assembly, as well as a U.S. flag to take on her trip to the world games. With Updike is her javelin coach, John Kotchmar (left).
