Ground was broken for the new Slatington High School during a ceremony held on Alumni Field, site of the new school. School board president Yvonne Caton and member Woodrow Serfass simultaneously overturned the first shovels filled with dirt. Robert Dreisbach, president of the school authority, said, "I hope the children in the school district appreciate what the people are doing for them." Dr. William Sharkan, superintendent of schools, also spoke.
