Local students share in $1.2 million worth of Burger King scholarships
As they head to college this fall, 94 students from Pennsylvania will take with them scholarships from the Burger King Scholars program. Over $1.2 million was donated nationwide and throughout parts of Canada in the company's 10th year of the program. Among the recipients are two local high school seniors who received $1,000 scholarship awards in recognition of their outstanding academic achievement, along with other academic and community involvement criteria.
Among the high school seniors who received Burger King Scholarships are Kacey Galasso, Lehighton Area High School, $1,000 Burger King Employee Scholars Award; and Meredith Fay, Blue Mountain High School, Schuylkill Haven, $5,000 James W. McLamore Scholarship. Created in memory of BURGER KINGî co-founder, James W. McLamore, the BURGER KINGî Scholars Program has awarded a total of 13,812 scholarships, representing more than $14 million awards since the program's inception in 2000.
"Today, it's more important than ever that young people prepare for a challenging future," said Ivette Diaz, executive director of the HAVE IT YOUR WAYî Foundation. "The BURGER KINGî Scholars Program continues to offer financial support in these fast-changing times, so that these committed and accomplished students can continue their education and pursuit of successful careers."
Additionally, two BURGER KINGî student employees were awarded $5,000 scholarships. These recipients are selected based on their academic achievements, financial need and community involvement. In addition, they must have worked for the company for at least one year.
The $5,000 scholarships are awarded to the top-ranked employees from around the country and are supported by the McLamore Family Foundation. Scholarship awards help graduates offset the cost of attending college or a post-secondary vocational/technical school. Graduating seniors throughout the United States, Puerto Rico and Canada are eligible for the scholarships.
Recipients are selected based on their grade point average, work experience, financial need, extracurricular activities and community service. Scholarship funds come directly from the HAVE IT YOUR WAYî Foundation and company- and franchise-owned BURGER KINGî restaurants throughout the country that host a variety of fundraising activities in order to generate funds for scholarships each year.
