Brothers' deaths believed to be murder-suicide

Published July 09. 2010 05:00PM

Twin brothers Gerald J. and Nicholas P. Avvisato, 58, of 356 Center St., Parryville, both died of gun shot wounds, according to Carbon County Coroner Bruce Nalesnik.

Nalesnik said state police at Lehighton are continuing their investigation into the deaths of the twins.

He said troopers believe it was a murder-suicide.

Nalesnik said Nicholas died of a shotgun wound to the abdomen while Gerald used a handgun to take his own life. The coroner also said that Nicholas had apparently been dead for several days as the body was decomposing when found.

An autopsy on Nicholas was performed at the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township, to determine the exact cause of death.

Neighbors told media outlets that the brothers, who resided together in an apartment at the above address, often fought. One neighbor said Gerald moved into the apartment in November 2009.

Nalesnik confirmed that investigators were told that the two often fought.

Troopers said Gerald took his own life on Tuesday, July 6, when he pulled his vehicle into a stall at a car wash at the Shell service station along SR209 in Towamensing Township.

On Thursday, July 7, police went to the apartment the brothers' shared and found the body of Nicholas.
