An elderly woman, identified at the scene as Rita Billets of Nesquehoning, was seriously injured Thursday afternoon when involved in a crash at the intersection of SR209 and Mermon Street in Nesquehoning. The crash occurred as the victim was traveling west on Catawissa Street (209) when for some unknown reason she lost control of her vehicle. The car swerved to the right striking a parked pickup truck then a utility pole. The force of the impact caused the three sets of traffic lights to come crashing to the ground. The woman was treated at the scene then flown via Medevac helicopter to a Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township. The road was closed for over an hour. Nesquehoning fire police maintained traffic control at the scene. Responding were the Hauto and New Columbus Fire companies. Chief of Police Sean Smith is investigating the incident.
