Man involved in armed robbery gets probation
One of three men charged in connection with an armed robbery entered a guilty plea to a reduced charge in Carbon County court on Thursday and was placed on probation.
He was one of five defendants in pending cases to enter a plea before Judge Steven R. Serfass.
Allen Bruce Quarles, 21, of Albrightsville, entered pleas in three pending cases one of which involved the armed robbery.
Quarles was arrested on June 20, 2009, for his part in the robbery that occurred at the main office of Split Rock Lodge in Kidder Township.
At the time police said Quarles, and two co-defendants, robbed the lodge about 2:20 a.m. and fled in a Honda car. The police found the car and stopped it taking Quarles, David J. Acevedo, 21, and William Javier Tappan, 18, all of Albrightsville, into custody. The three were charged with robbing the lodge. Quarles pleaded to one count of theft in the case with the more serious charges dropped in a plea bargain.
He also pleaded to another theft count for an incident in Lehighton on the same day in which Vincent McIntosh, of Lehighton, was robbed along S. Third St. near Center.
Quarles also pleaded to one count of persistent disorderly conduct for an incident on Dec. 26, 2009, along Mauch Chunk Rd., in Palmerton.
Serfass placed Quarles on probation for the first count for three years; six months probation for the second theft; and three months probation for the third count; all terms running concurrently.
Quarles was ordered to make resitutuion totaling $196.
The two other defendants in the case previously entered guilty pleas and were sentenced.
Other defendants who entered guilty pleas included:
Tyler Scott Fritzinger, 22, of Walnutport, pleaded to one count of driving under the influence (DUI). He was arrested on June 14, 2008, along Third St., in Palmerton. Given a test, the result was .10BAC.
Serfass placed him on probation for three months and ordered he pay a fine of $300 and get a drug and alcohol (D&A) evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment. On a summary offense he was fined $200 and costs.
Keith Samuel Lawrence, 23. of Palmerton, pleaded to one count of furnishing alcohol to a minor. He was arrested by Palmerton police on Aug. 7, 2009, along Delaware Avenue for supplying alcohol to a 15-year-old female.
Serfass placed him on probation for a year and ordered he pay a fine of $1,000, restitution of $2,000 and get a mental health evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment.
David McFarland, 40, of Palmerton, pleaded to one count of DUI. He was arrested on March 1, 2009, along Mauch Chunk Road, in Palmerton. Given a test, the result was .24BAC.
Serfass sentenced him to serve five days to six months in jail, a fine of $300, one year license suspension, get a D&A evaluation, and render 20 hours of community service.
He will begins the jail term on Jan. 29 at 9 a.m. serving three days, then Feb. 5, serving two days.
Craig L. Whitfield, 41, of Allentown, pleaded to one count of DUI. He was arrested on July 3, 2009, along Pohopoco Drive, in Franklin Township. Given a test, the result was .28BAC.
Serfass sentenced him to serve 90 days to five years in jail, a fine of $1,500, license suspended for 18 months, and get a D&A evalaution.
He will begin the jail term on Jan. 25 at 9 a.m.
All defendants must also pay court costs and a $50 per month supervision fee.
