Pleasant Valley says a final 'good-bye' to two longtime teachers
Dr. Douglas Arnold expressed the board's sympathy to the families on the recent passing of retired PVHS home economics teacher of 31 years, Kathy James, 69, and Gail Godshall, 64, elementary teacher of PV for 36 years, retired.
Janice Griffith, representing Pleasant Valley Cubs Football and Cheerleading, K-7th grade, read a portion of a letter addressed to the Pleasant Valley School Board in which the organization thanked Dr. Douglas Arnold, PVSD superintendent, and the PVSD school board for their help and support.
Dr. Arnold thanked Griffith and the organization but said he has had little to do with anything and all the thanks should go to the school board members and Jake Percey, Chris Fisher, Viola Murphy and the custodians.
The treasurer's report was approved with one "No" vote from board member James Spinola.
With Dr. Arnold's policy revisions report, it was approved with one "No" vote from Spinola.
He reported that the district's enrollment is at 5,946.
Dr. Arnold congratulated Jordan Toledo, a PVHS senior, who won his school record 110th bout as the Bears beat East Stroudsburg South 45-20 in Mountain Valley Conference wrestling on Wednesday, Jan. 6.
He also recognized Mrs. Jacqueline Ludka's senior honors English class for their extraordinary effort for a successful fundraiser for the Follow Me Foundation, having raised $6,200. Rep. John Siptroth presented the class with a plaque for their endeavors, which he presented to school board president, Susan Kresge.
"They did a great job and we're really proud of them," said Dr. Arnold.
Chris Fisher, PVSD assistant to the superintendent for professional and support services, reported that the vaccination program for the H1N1 vaccine went extremely well, thanks to all the staff volunteers.
Leon Barlieb was approved for re-appointment to the MCTI Authority for a term that expires Dec. 2015.
The following have been hired as part-time professional associates at an annual salary of $19,250, prorated: Jessica Pederson, Polk; Mary Ellen Perloni, PVE; Lorie Rehrig, Polk.
New support staff substitutes hired are: Lorraine Danny, monitor; Heather Kelly, PPA; Layla Richard, PPA; Norma Rodriguez, monitor; Tina Tedesco, monitor; Michelle Johnson, PPA.
Teachers, Sally Drosnock and Edward Slatky were approved for tenure after serving PVSD for three years.
Miriam Cuddy has been hired as an elementary substitute teacher and Tracie Procanyn as school nurse.
The board accepted the resignation of Florence Fludd, Polk paraprofessional associate, effective Dec. 9, 2009, Patricia McEvoy, Chestnuthill cafeteria worker as of Dec. 8, 2009 and Heather Sizemore, PVE PPA, effective Jan. 9, 2010.
The board accepted the letters of retirement from: Linda Hinton, PVMS school secretary, effective June 30, 2010; Joseph Nagele, Sr., substitute custodian, effective Dec. 21, 2009; Patrician Penchishen, PVMS school secretary, effective Aug. 31, 2010.
