Daffodil Days, the symbol of hope
CAROL ZICKLER/SPECIAL TO THE TIMES NEWS Preparing for the March 15-21 ACS Daffodil Days are left to right Susan Choy, committee person; Caylan Chanwik, pre-sales coordinator; Bob Stevenson, chairperson; Lisa Hiles, ACS committee;and Micah Gursky, Honorary Chairperson.
To get ready for the American Cancer Society's Carbon-Tamaqua Unit's annual Daffodil Days campaign, members gathered at Rosie's Restaurant in Lansford for preparation of the event and to enjoy an informal breakfast
Micah Gursky called it,"The Energize and Kick-Off Campaign. There's something about getting those yellow flowers each year. They are a symbol of hope and charity."
"The goal this year, commented Bob Stevenson, is $43,000 and pre-orders must be received by Feb. 22." Judy Hoppes explained some points through a power point presentation. Members of the Panther Valley High School's Junior Class National Honor Society were in attendance to help with the fundraiser.
A special guest who spoke about her cancer battle was Rosemary Frey of Lehighton. Frey was told that she had colon cancer in March 2009 and has been receiving treatments since that time.
Chanwik explained the procedure for the daffodil orders to those who will be assisting in sales. Daffodils are the perennial ACS symbol of hope for cancer patients.
In addition to the usual bunch of daffodils for $10, people may choose a box of 500 for $500 or a half box for $250. "Brithdays R Hope"is the sixth in a special Boyd's Bear collection designed for the ACS. The bear, accompanied by a bunch of flowers, is available for $26. A special edition Daffodil Days vase with 10 flowers costs $15. Also donors may choose to comfort a child in the community by donating $25 to Project Care, which provides a Boyd's Bear and flowers to affected children. Or donations of $25 or more may be earmarked for Project Hope, which offers the opportunity to anonymously donate daffodils and cancer information to a local cancer patient.
Advance orders will be accepted until Feb. 22. Daffodils will be delivered the week of March 15-21.
