Weissport sells old police car for $800 less than anticipated
Weissport Council sold the old police car and already have plans for the $4,348 the sale will generate.
Council members hope to use the police car funds toward the purchase a 2011 Silverado dump pickup truck with a plow that will be used by borough workers to clear snow and perform maintenance work within the borough. The estimated cost of the truck is $43,860.
Council was hoping to get $5,150 for the car, but decided to sell the car to the only bidder, Grace Quality Used Cars, Morrisville, instead of readvertising it and hoping for a higher bidder. The lone bid was opened Monday night.
Secretary Dana Brubaker said that cost for insurance is $916 a year for the vehicle and had cost $113 to advertise it for sale.
Council members voted unanimously to accept the bid instead of readvertising.
Council is hoping to purchase the new four-wheel drive, dual axle truck as soon as possible.
Brubaker said that council can use liquid fuels of $1,700 a year toward the payments, plus council is receiving a $10,000 grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development through State Rep. Keith McCall. Plus council sold a mower deck and hopes to sell another used dump truck to raise additional funds.
For the next two years council will pay $187 a month for the truck lease agreement and for the final three years, the payments will be approximately $350 a month. After five years, council can purchase the truck for $1, said Brubaker.
If the truck is available on the lot, council may hold a special meeting to make the purchase final as soon as possible.
Council also hopes to update borough ordinances regarding the park, playground and handicapped parking signs.
Tim Rehrig, council president, said that council plans to review old ordinances before moving forward.
Council member Gene Kershner said that has spoken to a security company about providing a security camera for the playground area to monitor the area.
Council has noted some vandalism in the playground area.
