Carbon lawsuit trial against PV continued

A Carbon County Court trial scheduled for today before Judge Steven R. Serfass to settle a lawsuit filed by the county against the Panther Valley School District has been continued.

A new date has yet to be scheduled for the trial, which is expected to determine whether Portnoff Law Associates of Norristown, Bucks County, must turn over to the county permanent records of delinquent property taxes it has collected for the school district. Portnoff has given the county financial data, but has retained the records. At issue is also a 5 percent commission the county is entitled to regardless of who collects the delinquent taxes. The county Tax Claim Bureau wants the records of property leins and delinquencies so it can collect the commission, which could amount to $323,000, according to the suit. The county filed the suit in November, 2009.The school district hired Portnoff in 2000 to collect late taxes.
