Service projects will benefit from annual Lions tournament
Service projects supported by the Summit Hill Lions Club received a financial boost on Sunday, Aug. 8, when the club held its Ninth Annual Golf Tournament at the Mahoning Valley Country Club, Mahoning Township.
The tournament followed a four-person scramble format with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. The winning team was comprised of Joe Velitsky, Stan Kozuch, Hal Hydro and Jeff Weiss. They recorded a score of 61, edging both the second- and third-place finishers in Flight A by two strokes. The winners received cash prizes, a foursome round of play at the Blue Ridge Country Club, Palmerton, and gift certificates to The Lantern, Nesquehoning.
Second place went to a foursome that included Ken Boyd and Joe Marcola, and two other golfers, while the team of Ivan Meixell, Dave Platzer, Tony Naimor and Bill Walsh copped third place. The second-place finishers received a foursome round of play at the Split Rock Golf Course, Lake Harmony, and gift certificates to Kelly's Irish Pub, Lansford, while third place prizes included a foursome play at MVCC and a dozen of golf balls each.
In Flight B, first place was won by Joe Rhodunda, John Watto, Dennis Hissen and Mark Rhodunda. They received a foursome play at MVCC, four tickets to a Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs game and a sleeve of golf balls each. Finishing second were Bob Thomas, Rusty Marshall, Greg Stanek and Jim Urban, while third place went to John McGuire, Mary McGuire, Kyle Scheckler and Jerome Scheckler. All three teams tallied scores of 69. The second-place winners received a foursome play at MVCC and gift certificates to The Gem Shop, Jim Thorpe, while third place awards were a foursome round at MVCC, four Ping hats and six tickets to a Scranton-Wilkes Barre Yankees game.
In the closest-to-the-pin competition on hole No. 4, Stanek was declared the winner, while Marshall won the longest drive competition off the No. 1 tee.
Golfers enjoyed coffee and doughnuts before teeing off, a barbecue lunch and a cookout after the tournament.
