A Lansford man admitted stealing from his neighbors while a Weatherly man admitted assaulting his girlfriend. Both defendants were among several to enter guilty pleas in Carbon County court on Tuesday before Judge Steven R. Serfass.

Several theftsRyan Gorka, 27, pleaded to one count of burglary, as a felony one. He admitted entering the home of his neighbors, Mark and Cindy Zimmerman, along W. Ridge Street, and stealing from them.According to borough police there was more than one incident of Gorka entering the home and taking various items. The victims noted items missing from their home and set up video surrveillance which caught Gorka in the act, Assistant District Attorney Joseph Matika said.When confronted by police he admitted to the thefts. Defense Atty. Bruce S. Miller said his client had a serious addiction problem at the time. The police reported losses totaling about $4,000 for the Zimmerman's. Charges were filed Sept. 1, 2009.Serfass accepted the plea but deferred sentencing ordering a presentence investigation (PSI) report be prepared by the adult probation office.Lansford incidentJose Bolivar Arroyo, 51, of Weatherly, pleaded guilty to one count of simple assault for an incident that occurred in Lansford.According to borough police Arroyo was at the apartment of his then girlfriend, Julie Fritchman, and engaged in an argument. During the altercation Arroyo struck her in the head and pulled her hair.Arroyo, who has a prior criminal record involving several driving under the influence (DUI) convictions, has been in the county prison since the incident, which occurred on April 8.Serfass sentenced Arroyo to serve three to 12 months in prison and ordered he get a drug and alcohol (D&A) evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment, have no contact with the victim and is eligible for the re-entry program. He was given credit for 77 days spent in jail on the charge.Other pleasOther defendants who entered pleas included:Daniel Francis Henry, 35, of Morristown, N.J., and formerly of Junedale, pleaded to one count of DUI. He was arrested on Jan. 23 along SR4004 in Banks Township, by state police at Hazleton. Given a test, the result was .27BAC.Serfass sentenced him to serve five days to six months in jail, a fine of $300, a one year license suspension and ordered to get a D&A evaluation. He was given credit for 17 days spent in a inpatient rehabilitation program and was immediately paroled.Thomas McBrien, 51, of Upper Black Eddy, Bucks County, pleaded to one count of DUI. He was arrested on Nov. 15, 2009, along E. Main St., in Weatherly. Given a test, the result was .13BAC.Serfass sentenced him to serve five days to six months in jail, a fine of $300, one year license suspension, get a D&A evaluation and render three hours of community service per month while on probation. He will begin the jail term on Sept. 7 at 9 a.m.Jamie Bauder, 27, of Lansford, pleaded in two pending cases. She pleaded to one count of criminal conspiracy-harassment for an incident on Nov. 16, 2009, involving Debra Derr, of Nesquehoning, as the victim. Her co-defendant is Jeffrey Cope, her ex-boyfriend. She also pleaded to one count of harassment for an incident on April 20 in Lansford with Derr the victim.Serfass placed her on probation for a year on each count, running concurrently, and ordered she get a mental health evaluation, have no contact with Derr, and render 25 hours of community service.James Acevedo-Schneider, 20, of Lansford, pleaded to one count of defiant trespass. He was arrested on Jan. 6 by Lansford police for entering 401 W. Bertsch St. without permission.Schneider told Serfass he was homeless and he was in the building for shelter. He has been in jail since his arrest.Serfass sentenced him to time served (217 days) in jail and immediately paroled him.David Michael Burns Jr., 21, of Beaver Meadows, pleaded to one count of receiving stolen property. He was arrested on May 23, 2009, in Weatherly, for having in his possession a stolen backpack. Police said the backpack was among several items stolen from various vehicles in the borough.Serfass placed him on probation for a year and ordered he make restitution of $27.02, one-half the total, and render 25 hours of community service.Audrey Makara, 53, of Lansford, pleaded to one count of DUI. She was arrested on Feb. 23, 2009, along Patterson St., in Lansford. A test revealed a .12BAC.She was placed on probation for six months and ordered to pay a fine of $300 and get a D&A evaluation.Christopher James Miller, 20, of Weatherly, pleaded to one count of fleeing or eluding police. He was arrested on Jan. 21, 2009, along Laurytown Rd., in Lehigh Township, by state police at Hazleton. He fled troopers who eventaully lost sight of his vehicle. However, troopers managed to get the license plate number and went to Miller's home and arrested him.Miller admitted to a drug addiction problem and spent time in a inpatient rehab facility.Serfass placed him on probation for a year and ordered he render 25 hours of community service and continue D&A counseling.Nicholas Peter Hadzick, 31, of Beaver Meadows, pleaded to one count of DUI. He was arrested on Feb. 21, 2009, along SR93 in Beaver Meadows. Given a test, the result was .19BAC.Serfass placed her on probation for six months, pay a fine of $300 and get a D&A evaluation. On a summary motor vehicle code violation he was fined $25 and costs.Michael Gerard Furey, 45, of Lansford, pleaded to one count of DUI. He was arrested at Springgarden and Abbott sts., Lansford, on Nov. 7, 2009. He reportedly refused a test.Serfass sentenced him to serve five days to six months in jail, a fine of $300, one year license suspension and get a D&A evaluation. On a summary offense he was fined $25 and costs. He will serve the jail term beginning Sept. 5 at noon, two days a week for two weeks and then the third day.Edward Alan Gusick, 45, of Summit Hill, pleaded to one count of DUI. He was arrested on April 3 at Chestnut and Hazard sts., Summit Hill. Given a test, the result was .26BAC.Serfass placed him on probation for six months and ordered he pay a fine of $300, zero tolerance imposed on D&A use, get a D&A evaluation, submit to random testing and render five hours of community service per month while on probation.Peggy Hill, 44, of Lansford, pleaded to one count of DUI. She was arrested on March 7 along Patterson St., in Lansford. Given a test, the result showed the presence of a controlled substance-cocaine, in her system.Serfass sentenced her to serve 72 hours to six months in jail, a fine of $1,000, license suspended for a year and get a D&A evaluation. She will begin the jail term on Aug. 30 at 9 a.m.Frank Nelson Miller, 34, of Summit Hill, pleaded to one count each of habitual offender and driving while under suspension-DUI related. He was arrested on May 4 at Ludlow and Market streets, Summit Hill.On the habitual offender count Serfass sentenced him to serve 60 days to one year in jail and on on the suspension count 60 days in jail, a fine of $500, and ordered to get a D&A evaluation. The jail terms run concurrently.He will begin the jail term on Aug. 30 at 9 a.m. and serve the time on consecutive Monday to Wednesdays.Each defendant sentenced must also pay court costs and a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation or parole.
