Slatington crash brings down several poles

Main street in the borough of Slatington was closed to traffic Monday after a crash brought down several utility poles and wires along the busy thoroughfare. The crash occurred at 5:20 p.m. at the intersection of Main and Second streets. A car swerved to avoid another but struck and snapped off a utility pole at its base, causing it to come to rest against the front wall of the First Niagara National Bank. The tension of the wires to that pole caused several other poles to collapse as well. Slatington firefighters closed down Main street until work crews of PPL Electric arrived on scene. Traffic was rerouted around the scene. Traffic was reported to be a nightmare at the time due to the fact Main street, Route 873, is a main corridor between Lehigh and Carbon counties.
