County court brought into controller dispute

Published August 24. 2010 05:00PM

The Schuylkill County court has been brought in to deal with the controversy between the controller and board of county commissioners through a civil action started Monday afternoon.

The commissioners filed an action in mandamus to seek a judge to order Controller Melinda Kantner to complete the annual financial report which the county must submit to the state. The deadline for completion of such a report was July 1.

There has been in-fighting between the controller and the auditor hired by the county to do the audit. Sam Deegan, of Pottsville, was hired. He replaces an auditing firm which had been doing the audits for years.

Deegan had complained to the commissioners recently he had been stonewalled by the controller and is having difficulty completing the audit which must be submitted to the state Department of Economic Development.

Kantner's response was that Deegan never did a county audit in the past and also that he was hired by the commissioners to make her office look bad.
