Grants key to park plans

Published August 14. 2010 09:00AM

Two community organizations in Summit Hill are planning major park improvements but both projects rely on grants.

Sharon Chapman, representing the Summit Hill Community Improvement Organization (SHCIO), asked borough council to apply - on SHCIO's behalf - for a grant to make improvements to Ludlow Park.

Monica Marshall, chairman of the borough's Recreation Commission, said application is being made to improve playground facilities at the east side Little League field.

Chapman said SHCIO is hoping to obtain a Local Share Grant from gambling revenues. She said the only way to obtain such funding is if the borough applies and not the individual organization.

The borough unanimously agreed to support the effort.

The funds, if received, would be used to pave the walking area, add new sidewalks along the Holland Street side, install 10-15 new benches, and upgrade electric.

"I think it would be worth it for the borough," Chapman said.

Marshall said the Recreation Commission is seeking a grant from SHCIO to add a sand box, swings, and a new slide to the playground on the east side of the town.

She said SHCIO will also be asked for a request to purchase new sand for the Bill Black Park playground along West Holland Street.

In other recreation news, Marshall said a kids' movie night will be held in the new Community Center at 7 p.m. on Sept. 18. Admission will be free, with popcorn and drinks being served.

In one other recreation item, Marshall said the commission is considering moving the annual Memorial Day Stay-At-Home celebration from Ginder Park to a block party format at the fire company.

She said the festival "requires a lot of time and money that is not being returned in volunteerism or profit."

She presented a list of events for the forthcoming year:

Aug. 22 - Kids' Day at the Park - Ludlow Park. The event will be at 1 p.m. and the commission will give hot dogs, treats, and drinks for students ages 5-10. There also will be games.
