State Route 248 in Carbon County was closed to traffic Thursday night as workers from Walsh Construction laid three additional 160-foot steel re-enforced concrete beams. The beams will be a portion of the new turnpike bridge, which will carry the roadway over the Lehigh River. Two huge cranes picked up the large beams and placed them onto the awaiting concrete piers with the precision of a surgeon. The bridge is one of two being replaced by the turnpike.
