Drive gets bigger every year

St. John's Lutheran Church in Jim Thorpe will be holding its seventh annual community clothing giveaway throughout August.

Anyone is free to browse through the collected items, which run the gamut from suits and shoes to hats and T-shirts."The drive seems to get bigger every year," church volunteer Mary Strohl said. "This is, by far, the biggest one we've had. People have been very generous."For three weeks, Strohl and her fellow volunteers gathered clothing of all sizes and shapes from area residents. The drive's reputation seems to have preceded it, as donors from Hazelton and Bethlehem trekked in to provide some of their own gently used clothing.New to this year's drive are children's items, such as toys, books and CDs. Strohl said this addition came spontaneously, as some of the clothing donors were looking to find new homes for their various trinkets."We took everything we could get," Strohl said. "If it's clean and in good condition, we're putting it out."The giveaway will be open Aug. 5-7, 12-14 and 19-21. Operating hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursdays, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Fridays and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays."Our goal is to meet the needs of the people in the community," Strohl said. "Thanks to the many donations we get and the hard work of our volunteers, we've been successful every year."For more information, contact the church office at (570) 325-4255. St. John's is located at 319 South Avenue, in Jim Thorpe.
