Chemo hats warm the soul
LINDA KOEHLER/TIMES NEWS Left to right, Claire Napierski, Kathy Hargash, Carol Esdale and Linda Bryfogle, members of the Western Pocono Women's Club display the 111 Chemo Hats that some of their members along with members of Effort UMC and GFWC Pocono Women's Club knitted and crocheted to be distributed to cancer patients.
The GFWC Western Pocono Women's Club are involved in a project to knit or crochet Chemo Hats for cancer patients.
They provide a cancer patient, and those making them, warmth of the soul.
"When we make these hats, they are a small symbol of hope and love with the power to brighten a cancer patients life," says Kathy Hargash.
The hats are made with 4-ply worsted weight 100 percent cotton yarn or any soft baby yarn for comfort.
They will be distributed in Monroe and Carbon counties.
"We got the idea from a group called Knots of Love. I believe they are based in California.
About three months ago Carol Esdale came up with the idea of us doing this project.
"I think everyone has someone in their family who has or has had cancer," said Hargash.
With the help of Effort United Methodist Church, neighbors and others in the GFWC Pocono Women's Club, they have made 111 hats to date.
They will be given to Hughes Cancer Center and The American Cancer Society, both in Stroudsburg, to be distributed to cancer patients.
"We will be looking for other outlets as we would like this to be an ongoing project for the Club," said Hargash.
