Carbon to hold Law Day

Published April 19. 2010 05:00PM

Law Day is recognized on May 1. It is commemorated each year by the American Bar Association and local bar associations across the country, is aimed at fostering community awareness and understanding about the American legal system.

Because May 1 is a Saturday this year, the Carbon County Bar Association will be celebrating Law Day from 9 a.m. to noon on Friday, April 30.

The Carbon County Bar Association Young Lawyers Division, in cooperation with Marian Catholic and Palmerton high schools, will be presenting the annual Law Day program in courtroom no. 1 of the Carbon County Courthouse, Jim Thorpe.

Groups of high school students from the Carbon Career & Technical Institute, Jim Thorpe, Lehighton, Marian, Palmerton, Panther Valley, and Weatherly will be attending the day's activities. Members of the public are also invited to attend the program.

During the day the bar association will present the court's "Jury Orientation Program."

Following orientation a county judge and members of the bar association will discuss the purpose and significance of Law Day.

A mock criminal trial, put on by Marian and Palmerton high schools' mock trial teams, will then take place.

Students from each high school will be selected to sit on the jury so that they can participate directly in the trial and have an opportunity to experience deliberation and returning a verdict.
