Arner Auctioneer to continue tradition
TN FILE PHOTO/DONALD R. SERFASS The late Robert A. Arner auctions off a lone surviving 1917 Harley Davidson motorcycle and sidecar in this file photo of April 6, 2006, fetching a high bid of $87,000. Arner passed away late last year but Arner Auctioneers will continue under the guidance of his wife and business partner Florence, assisted by auctioneer Donald P. Richard.
Veteran auctioneer Robert A. Arner passed away last November 1 at age 67, but his well established business is continuing under the guidance of Arner's life-long business partner - his wife Florence.
According to Florence Arner, there will be a new face, but otherwise, the tradition will continue.
Arner Auctioneers, LLC, will utilize the auction skills of Donald P. Richard, a 20-plus year veteran of the auction business.
"He apprenticed under Robert years ago," said Arner.
Richard owns and operates Donald P. Richard Auctioneers & Co., 115 Gravel Pike in Hereford. He will continue to operate his own business but will lend his talents to Arner Auctioneers as well.
With Richard working the podium conducting sales for the New Ringgold-based operation, Arner will continue to handle accounting, bookkeeping, setup/set up, inventory and all of the other facets of the business that she has handled over the past 51 years.
The business will continue to operate as a family enterprise, assisted by Sandy Christman of Franklin Township and Arner's daughter Karen Arner Moyer, and her twins Meghan and Mikayla, and daughter Makenzie.
Arner said her late husband would have wanted the business to continue uninterrupted.
"Robert always liked the auction business because he enjoyed having his family at his side," said Arner.
Arner, the former Florence Kunkel of Mahoning Valley, met Robert Arner of West Penn Township at age 15. The couple began dating by age 16 and married three years later.
From the start, Florence Arner knew she had a calling to help her husband in the auction business because she admired Robert's approach to his customers and his caring nature.
"He said early on that we'd run it God's way, not man's way."
Arner said her husband always had a special knack in dealing with clients.
"So many times he didn't just do the auctions, but he did counseling. He helped," she said, explaining that he enjoyed aiding customers any way he could, often times offering fatherly advice or going out of his way to lend a hand.
