Colts finish unbeaten in league

Marian and Panther Valley both wrapped up successful Schuylkill League golf seasons with victories on Thursday.


North Schuylkill-Marian

Marian won its last Schuylkill League match of the year, beating North Schuylkill 317-384.

Nick Tristani once again led the Colts. He fired a three-under 69 at his home course.

Marian finishes the season a perfect 12-0 in the league and will take part in the Schuylkill League playoffs next Wednesday at Mountain Laurel.

Panther Valley clinched a spot in the Schuylkill League playoffs next week with a 315-340 victory over Jim Thorpe.

Scott Nevenglosky and Kory Lopata paced the Panthers with a team-low 78.

The Olympians' Ben Stermer took medalist honorsa with a 72.

Panther Valley moves to 10-2 on the season.

No. Lehigh-Palmerton-Notre Dame GP-Salisbury-Saucon Valley-Wilson

Local Colonial League cross country teams Northern Lehigh and Palmerton took part in a six team meet.

The Palmerton boys picked up two victories on the day, beating both Salisbury and Northern Lehigh. Aaron Papay led the team with a ninth place finish. Austin Danish was Northern Lehigh's top finisher in 12th.

On the flip side, it was the Lady Bulldogs winning two of their matches. Northern Lehigh was led by Steph Pryor and her eighth place finish. Teammate Sam Corcoran (14) also placed in the top-15. Palmerton high girl was Andrea Stevko and 11th.

Northwestern-Bangor-NDES-Catasauqua-So. Lehigh-Pen Argyl-Moravian-Palisades

In an eight team Colonial League meet at Palisades, Northwestern ran away with a sweep in its final results.

The Tigers move to 10-3 on the season with wins over Bangor (20-40), Catty (24-42), Notre Dame of East Stroudsburg (25-35) and Southern Lehigh (21-38). Meanwhile, the Lady Tigers remain unbeaten at 13-0 by going 4-0 as well on the day.

NW's Lindsey Kerr crossed the finish line first in the girls' meet. Teammates Katie Hallingstad (fourth), Ramzy Burns (seventh) and Megan Handwerk (eighth) added top 10 finishes.

On the boys' side, Cody Reinert and Tyler Malay finished in seventh and eighth place for the Tigers.

Panther Vy.-Jim Thorpe

Panther Valley defeated Jim Thorpe in Schuylkill League action, 25-13, 25-19, 25-16.

Carly Markovich paced the Panthers with 17 assists, eight service points and six kills, while Katie Zulic chipped in with 13 service points, two assists and two aces. Teammate Tricia Janowiak finished with 11 service points, six skills and three aces.

For Jim Thorpe, Marissa Cantelmi had 15 assists and Jill Andrews had 15 digs. Brittany Holland (six kills) and Victoria Nichols (five kills) led the way at the net.

In the JV game, Panther Valley posted a 25-6, 25-17 win.


Tri-Valley rolled to a 25-9, 25-20, 25-16 Schuylkill League win over visiting Weatherly.

Sarah Dolinsky led the Wreckers with 14 digs, six kills and one ace, while Brittney Hinkle (13 digs, three kills) and Alicia Panzarella (18 digs) contributed in the setback.

Weatherly is now 2-7 overall and 1-5 in the league.


Marian handled Millersburg with ease, winning the Schuylkill League match, 25-9, 25-6, 25-7.

Marykate Sherkness and Rachel Krajcirik each had 17 service points for the Fillies. Krajcirik also had 25 assists and seven aces. Devin Parambo chipped in with 15 digs.

Marian's JV also won, 25-17, 25-11.

Tamaqua-North Schuylkill

North Schuylkill recorded a 25-13, 25-21, 19-25, 25-23 Schuylkill League victory over Tamaqua.

The Blue Raiders' Sarah Lesisko recorded 12 service points and seven kills. Tiffany Billman contributed eight kills and one block.

Tamaqua slips to 3-3 on the season.



Bangor picked up a Colonial League soccer victory on the road, knocking off Northwestern 2-1.

Pat Hagan scored the eventual game-winning goal for the Slaters midway through the second half. Teammate Seth Ruggerio had the team's first half goal.

The Tigers' lone goal was scored by Tim East. Curtis Cappuccino had the assist.

Tamaqua-No. Schuylkill

Tamaqua picked up a 3-1 Schuylkill League win over North Schuylkill.

The Blue Raiders' Eric Bachert accounted for a goal and assist. Eric Hertzog and Nate Billet added single scores while Davide DeFiore and Billy Breiner were credited with assists.

The Spartans outshot the Blue Raiders 15-10. Zack Lakitsky grabbed nine saves in front of the Tamaqua net.

Blue Mt.-Jim Thorpe

Vaugh Wessner's two goals and two assists sparked Blue Mountain to a 6-1 Schuylkill League win over Jim Thorpe.

David Yuengling and Keith Wagner contributed to the Blue Eagles' attack with a goal and an assist.

Dillon Smith accounted for the Olympians' lone score with a first-half goal.

Justin Kaminski (seven saves) and Matt McCauley (one save) split time in front of the Olympians' net.


Halifax-Jim Thorpe

Halifax's Mackenzie Bingaman scored a goal in each half to lead her team to a 2-1 victory over the Jim Thorpe on Wednesday.

Kristin Lawrence had the Lady Olympians' only goal on a corner kick from Caitlin Liscinski with 14:04 left in the first half.

Jah Page had 14 saves in goal for Jim Thorpe.

Minersville-Jim Thorpe

Minersville beat Jim Thorpe, 5-1, in Schuylkill League action.

Sonia Bernetskie had two goals for the Miners.

Kristin Lawrence scored the Olympians' only goal on an assist from Nina Batts

Jim Thorpe had 19 shots on goal while Minersville had 37 shots. Jah Page and Samantha Hughes shared time in the net for the Olympians and had 10 and 14 saves respectively.

Tamaqua-North Schuylkill

Tamaqua rolled to a convincing win in its first home game of the season, 9-2, over North Schuylkill.

Ali Updike and Kayla Hope both scored hat tricks for the Raiders (7-0, 5-0). Scoring one goal each were Kailee Rottet, Cady O'Malley and Brianne Curvey. Rottet, Hope, Updike, Lauren Mateyak and Jackie Stewart all added assists.

Chey Bates had seven saves in goal for Tamaqua.

The Raiders added a 5-0 win in the JV game. Goals were scored by Rachel Confer, Taylor Gerber, Cady O'Malley, Hailey Jacobs and Brianne Curvey.



Caileigh Landrigan's four goals highlighted Northwestern's 7-0 Colonial League victory over Salisbury.

The Tigers' Caitlin Bagenstose, Kina Wehr and Sara Jones all finished with a goal and an assist while Lauren Horner, Tiffany Gumina and Ashely Pechacek all were credited with assists.

Northwestern moves to 6-2-1 on the season.


Kelsey Eaton scored twice for Palmerton, including the go-ahead goal with 3:40 left, that helped propel her Lady Bombers to a 3-2 Colonial League victory over Wilson.

Morgan Myers scored the other goal for the locals. She also assisted on Eaton's first tally.

The win is Palmerton's first in the league since 2005.
