Tamaqua resident seriously injured

A Tamaqua resident was seriously injured early Sunday morning when the vehicle she was a passenger in crashed along a Schuylkill County roadway. State police at Schuylkill Haven said the accident occurred at 12:48 a.m. along Molleystown Road, in Tremont Township.

Troopers said Ashley Koperna, 18, of Tower City, was driving a 2000 Ford Focus westbound when, for unknown reasons, the car entered the eastbound lane and onto the south berm. Koperna attempted to correct her steering and the car began to spin clockwise about 90-degrees.The vehicle then re-entered the westbound lane and went onto the north berm where the driver's side door impacted with a utility pole breaking the pole in half.Koperna and passenger, Kelly McKlveen, 20, of Tamaqua, had to be extricated from the car by rescue personnel. The two were flown by LifeLion helicopter to the Hershey Medical Center. Koperna is listed in critical condition and McKlveen in serious condition.Troopers said the investigation into the crash is continuing.
