Break-ins, mischief incidents investigated

State police at Fern Ridge reported investigating a burglary and two acts of criminal mischief.

The break-in occurred on the 300 block of Miller Road in Jackson Township. A garage on the property was entered by prying open the door and several items were removed from multiple vehicle engine compartments.

The incident occurred sometime between 10 p.m. Sunday and 10 a.m. Monday.

Two acts of criminal mischief were reported.

Someone damaged a rear screen door on the 100 block of Chatham Hill Road. The incident occurred sometime between Dec. 9 and Saturday.

Lights draw attention, arrest

Raymond Neikam Jr., 37, of McAdoo, installed green ornamental lighting around the license plate of his vehicle, a move that landed him in jail.

McAdoo police were on patrol at 12:48 a.m. Tuesday when the saw the pretty, illegal green lights and conducted a traffic stop to issue a citation.

Unfortunately for Neikam, a records check found his driver's license was suspended DUI related. The records also show two warrants for his arrest, one from Luzerne County, the other from Hazleton City police.

Neikam was then lodged in the Luzerne County Prison, Wilkes-Barre.

Theft of radio towers reported

State police at Fern Ridge are investigating the theft of two radio towers.

Troopers said criminals entered a property at 1712 Upper Valley Road in Effort and removed two ham radio communication towers. The theft occurred sometime between Nov. 30 and Dec. 7.

Anyone with information concerning this incident is asked to call troopers at 570-646-2271.

DUI arrests reported

State police at Lehighton reported on the following driving under the influence arrests made by troopers.

John Mika, 32, of Weissport, was stopped at 12:30 a.m. on Nov. 23 at Bridge Street and Route 209 in Lehighton. He was found to be under the influence and arrested. Charges were filed.

Gurney Borger, 76, of Palmerton, was stopped for several motor vehicle code violations at 6:12 p.m. on Nov. 25 in the area of 1040 Church Road in Towamensing Township. He was found to be under the influence and placed under arrest.

Tractor-trailer crashes on I-81

A tractor with trailer rig crashed Tuesday along Interstate 81 in Ryan Township, Schuylkill County.

State police at Frackville said James J. Zeigler, 49, of Frackville, was driving a 2000 Freightliner tractor with trailer northbound about 8:55 a.m. when the left front tire blew out causing him to lose control.

The truck crossed the left lane, went onto the west berm and struck the guardrail. The rig came to rest in the median on its passenger side, facing north.

Three charged in Rush for thefts

Rush Township police have charged three people in connection with a series of retail thefts at the HT Commons Wal-Mart. The thefts were reported in October and November.

Jason Stephens, 21, and Alexandra Perez, 24, both of Tamaqua; and Alyssa Shellhammer, 24, of Barnesville, worked together to steal items from the retail store, then make fraudulent returns.

Pottsville woman cited for calls

A Pottsville woman was charged by Rush Township police after she repeatedly made unwanted phone calls.

Tammy Yatsko, 44, was charged with 12 counts of harassment by communication. She reportedly continued to make phone calls to another person despite repeated warnings.

Flight to avoid


Criminal charges were filed against James Smiley, 42, of 956 W. Edgemont Ave., Palmerton, for flight to avoid apprehension and resisting arrest. Charges were also filed against Michelle Kobal, 44, of 646 Upper Nis Hollow Drive, Lehighton, for flight to avoid apprehension and resisting arrest. The incident occurred at 9:59 a.m. on Oct. 23 in the 700 block of West Edgemont Avenue.

Crash on I-80 in Carbon

State police at Fern Ridge reported investigating a two-vehicle crash along Interstate 80 in Kidder Township, Carbon County, involving two Schuylkill County drivers. It was one of two crashes reported by troopers.

Troopers said Ashley A. Matina, 24, of Pottsville, was eastbound driving a 2008 Ford Focus at 9:02 p.m. on Dec. 12 when she lost control due to icy road conditions. The Ford spun in a clockwise direction and struck a 2001 Jeep Cherokee head-on, driven by Stephen A. Behun, 41, of Tamaqua.

A Tamaqua man has been cited by Coaldale police after he was caught running around on the roof of an apartment building at 127 E. Phillips St.

Police were dispatched to the property shortly after noon and found John Leroy Smith II on the roof. A rope was hanging from a pipe on the west side of the building.

Smith said he climbed the rope to the roof, just to see if he could do it to gain entry. He was holding a tan colored bag and had an ax in his hand. Smith placed the ax on the roof when officers arrived.
