ED HEDES/TIMES NEWS Palmerton wrestling team will be made up of: Front, from left, Dan Costenbader, Cody Garner, Shane Grohotolski, Dillon Massington, Dallas Miata, Sam Oberlander and Tony Garda. Back row, same order, Coach Mike Englert, Jarrett Kleintop, Zach Brett, Kane Kralik, Travis Wolfe, Michael Englert, Travis Verzino, Kawika Mook and Head Coach Dave Lavin. Cody Grohotolski is also a member of the team.

It's not an easy task finding first-year head coach Dave Lavin in the Palmerton High wrestling room. To say he looks like one of the boys would be an understatement.

Lavin, who hails from Mamaroneck, New York, wrestled in high school and placed fourth in the New York Section I State Championships and continued his career and education at Muhlenberg College and wrestled at 165 pounds and was a captain his senior year.

Back row, Coach Ralph Andrews, Coach Jackie Ivancich Jen Snyder, Lauryn Solt, Kelsey Hay, Samantha Smith, Morgan Mummey, Em Meinhart and head coach Don Delich.

Palmerton head girls basketball coach Don Delich returns for his seventh season and has to be cautiously optimistic about this year's squad.

Delich returns the offensive firepower of sophomore Kelsey Hay and junior Casey Rinfret, but must replace three key defensive players who graduated last June.

"We lost Erin Parsons, who was a four-year starter at point guard," Delich said. "Alyssa Minnich and Kristen Roberts were two year starters.

BOB FORD/TIMES NEWS Jim Thorpe wrestling team members include, front row, from left, Brian Ohl, Dillon Smith, Joe Hodnick, and Kevin Jaskot. Back row, Justin Mazzella, James Boyle, Dale Wakefield, James Denny, and Adam Rex.

The Jim Thorpe wrestling team will have very little margin for error in dual meets this season.

With just 11 varsity wrestlers, and several of them around the same weight, the Olympians will be forfeiting anywhere between three and five bouts every match.

Throw in the fact that Jim Thorpe returns just six varsity wrestlers from a year ago and that just one of them – Dillon Smith – had a winning record and its easy to see why veteran coach Guy Franko will have his work cut out for him.

But from the ashes of that disastrous 2-22 season that included suspensions and forfeits, the Lady Olympians have been rebuilt.

Just two players senior Hilary Reis and junior Brittany Holland still remain from that squad. The majority of this year's team is part of a talented sophomore class that comprises nine of the 12 roster spots.

SHAWN McFARLAND/TIMES NEWS Members of the Pleasant Valley wrestling team for the 2009-2010 season.

The wrestling landscape of the Mountain Valley Conference changed last year in just one match.

With Pleasant Valley and Stroudsburg squaring off in the final conference game of the season, the Mounties knocked off the Bears amidst some controversy to put an end to the Bears' run of six straight conference titles. This year head coach Mark Getz and his mat-men are looking to take back the hardware.

Life has been tough on the Pleasant Valley boys' basketball program as of late.

Head coach Ken Piontkowski and his players have faced their fair share of hardships over the past couple of years, as the Bears have won only four games in each of the last two seasons. Still, with three returning starters, Piontkowski is optimistic about his 2009-10 squad and is expecting better results.

Back row, from left, Kaycee Gutzie, Madison Monaco, Danielle Tristani, Gillian Ferko, Kelly Shober, Corrine Markiewicz and Kaysi McLaughlin.

For the first time in years, Marian head coach Paul Brutto was forced to rebuild.

With a roster full of youth, inexperience and unknowns, the Fillies finished last season with a record of 14-9.

It marked the first time in eight years that Marian didn't win 20 games and the first time since the 1992-1993 season that they won 14 games or less.

This season, however, the picture seems to be a little clearer, and according to Brutto, a little more optimistic.

Last season, Marian head coach Mick Stefanek saw his team repeat as Schuylkill League Division 3 champs, finish as the District 11 Class A runner-up and secure a spot in the PIAA State Tournament.

With three of its top four scorers returning and a senior-laden lineup, the Colts (16-10, 10-3) are certainly entering this season with plenty to prove.

Back row, head coach Richard Oertner, Joey Seremula, Evan Biegley, Nicholas Pappas, Lucas Pierce, Jordan Waylen, assistant coach Jeff Miller and assistant coach Dennis Rehrig.

Hopefully, the start of the 2009-10 preseason isn't a sign of what lies ahead for the Northern Lehigh boys' basketball team.

Since the first day of practice, the Bulldogs have dealt with a significant amount of challenges.

Even before the season started, Rich Oertner, who enters his 10th year as head coach, knew that he had a limited number of players to work with.

During the first two weeks of practice, six players were missing because of illness and the football postseason.
