Football

Taylor Breininger is having one of those years that a senior football player dreams of having. Last week, in the Tigers rivalry game against Northern Lehigh, Breininger recovered a fumble and returned it 74 yards for a touchdown, took a kickoff back 90 yards for another touchdown, and just for good measure, caught a two-yard touchdown pass from Frank Dangello. It was just another night on the field for Breininger, who is following in his family's football tradition at Northwestern.

Coaching football has been a family affair for the Koscioleks for over 40 years.

The late Cazzie Kosciolek Sr. began his coaching career at Panther Valley in 1972 and his sons Cazzie Jr., Greg and Matt all followed his footsteps into the profession.

But this week, the family affair the Koscioleks have with football might be more "Family Feud."

When Lehighton and Panther Valley play on Thursday night in Lansford, Greg Kosciolek will be on the Panther sideline and younger brother Matt will be part of the Indian staff.

"Mercy rule."

It's become a normal part of the sports vernacular.

But it wasn't too long ago that the term was just being introduced to high school sports.

The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) first adopted it for football during the 1998 season. The rule keeps the clock running, except for a few circumstances, if one team is ahead by 35 or more points during any stage in the second half.

Through four weeks of the season, mercy rule games have been quite prominant among Times News area teams.

Lehighton's move to the Anthracite Football League is already "paying" off.

After nearly two decades as a Mountain Valley Conference member, Lehighton officially began play in the AFL and the Schuylkill League this season.

If early indications hold true, the switch will not only suit the Indians well on the playing field, but at the ticket booth as well.

The final week of the regular season often has all the intensity and pressure of postseason football.

Some teams are battling to get into the playoffs while others are fighting for a better seed and a postseason home game.

There were six games last week that featured local teams and four of them (Jim Thorpe at Lehighton, Marian at Tamaqua, Northwestern at Catasauqua, and Stroudsburg at Pleasant Valley) had postseason implications for one or both teams.

It seems like only yesterday that the high school football season was kicking off. Nine area teams entered the season with high hopes and playoff dreams.

But the warm Friday night's of early September have given way to the brisk autumn evenings as the calendar prepares to turn to November.

Six area teams still have their playoff dreams intact as we brace for the final weekend of the regular season. This week, OVERTIME will examine how the year-old District 11 power rating system is impacting one area team's bid for a district playoff berth.

As expected, Catasauqua and East Stroudsburg South are proving to be the class of the Colonial League and the Mountain Valley Conference respectively. Both teams were pre-season league favorites and are currently undefeated. OVERTIME would be remiss not to point out the great seasons one-loss teams Palisades and Southern Lehigh are having in the CL and that Pleasant Valley and Stroudsburg are enjoying in the MVC.

But since both Catty and South have already beaten their two nearest pursuers, there seems to be little doubt how those league races are going to finish.

Six of the nine TIMES NEWS area teams picked up wins last weekend.

Included among those squads were Lehighton, Tamaqua and Marian which upped their season records to 4-3.

With Jim Thorpe at 6-1 and Northwestern and Pleasant Valley at 5-2, no less than six area clubs currently have winning records.

The last time six TN teams were above .500 after seven weeks of the season was 2008. In fact, in the previous 20 years there had only been four times that this has happened (2008, 2005, 1999 and 1994).

This week's OVERTIME column will highlight how Pleasant Valley has stepped up its defensive play the last couple of weeks. OVERTIME will also feature a long streak that came to an end at Northern Lehigh, a couple of rare offensive feats by Jim Thorpe, some noteable achievements by a pair of Pleasant Valley players, and a few other interesting items.

*******

It hasn't quite reached the point where Pleasant Valley's Jim Terwilliger needs to find a part-time job or take out a loan, but "Taco Monday" definitely has had Tewilliger digging deep into his pockets the last few weeks.

What a difference a year can make!

This week's OVERTIME column will focus on the early-season turnaround the Jim Thorpe football program has made in 2013. The Olympians haven't been alone when it comes to laying the ground work for a bounce back season, however.
