It's hard to imagine that four weeks into the 2012 season at Mahoning Valley Speedway and multi-time Modified track champion John Bennett of Lehighton is nowhere near the top five in points, a place he has solidified over the past five years. More to the fact is he's not even in the top ten as his results have been uncharacteristic of his amazing ability of getting around the demanding paved quarter mile.

Saturday night Bennett was back in true form as he shook all the hard luck that had beleaguered him and scored a decisive victory.

Painfully obvious, yet potentially effective. That's how you might characterize the following statement.

Eat 550 more calories per day than what you need to maintain your present weight, and you are going to add some. In fact, you should probably gain slightly more than a pound a week for at least the first few months.

Sherkness is still 'Queen of Court'
For Marykate Sherkness, her supporting cast couldn't have been any different. Yet, the end result proved to be exactly the same. For the second straight season, Sherkness continued her reign as "Queen of the Court," as the Marian junior has once again been recognized as the 2011 TIMES NEWS Volleyball Player of the Year. As a sophomore, Sherkness captured Player of the Year honors as a role player among an experienced roster consisting of six senior starters.
Tyler Haydt has suddenly become the man to beat at Mahoning Valley Speedway as the 26-year old from Kunkletown, fresh off his 100-lap Modified win a week ago, raced to his second straight victory which in the process also padded his point lead. Haydt's third win of the year came in a highly competitive feature that through most of the distance saw the front runners faceoff in a tight bunch with the likes of Chip Santee, Don Wagner, John Bennett, Zane Zeiner and Lonnie Haydt all racing under a blanket.
Bob Ford/TIMES NEWS Lehighton's A.J. Wenrich looks to first after tagging the base to force out Southern Lehigh's Connor Vanin during Tuesday's District 11 Class 3A quarterfinal.
Lehighton head coach Brian Polaha knew that Anthony Farole was "dialed in for a strong at-bat." With the game tied, the winning run in scoring position and a full count against him, Farole responded in the best way possible by driving the game-winning hit down the third base line that scored Billy Angst and allowed the Indians to play ball another day.
For many families, the Memorial Day Weekend represents the first group outing of the year into the outdoors with visits to Pennsylvania's State Parks and State Forests. These outings can be a time of bonding with nature, but should not be a time of "adopting" young wildlife that mistakenly are thought to have been abandoned by their parents.
Towamensing White Sox win tournament
The Towamensing White Sox defeated the Towamensing Phillies 1-0 in the championship game of the Hazle Township Ice Breaker tournament. In the title contest, Cody Green delivered the game-winning RBI in the sixth inning. Jared Zacharias had two hits in the game while Tanner Burnett pitched a shutout. Prior to the title game, the White Sox defeated Whitehaven Market, 16-3, Weatherly 2nd Street Deli, 13-2, and McAdoo Fire Company, 10-0.
