Another basketball season has come and gone.

And while the season is still fresh in our minds, it's a good time to hand out some awards.

Below are some of our "unofficial" honors from the past year.

One other note: the boys and girls players of the year will be named at a later date.

Boys Team of the Year

It's a great time to be a basketball fan in Pennsylvania.

March Madness is going on at two different levels here in the Keystone State.

While most fans' main focus is the NCAA Tournament, the PIAA playoffs are also well underway as the third and quarterfinal round begins tonight. All of our area teams were eliminated in the first two rounds. And just three of the 18 District 11 teams that earned a spot in states are still alive.

Of course none of those three are in the Class AAAA boys bracket. That's the domain of Philadelphia area teams.

Last week, I had the chance to wander through the Disney Spring Training site of the Atlanta Braves with all of the hoopla of ESPN's The Weekend and wall-to-wall celebrities. I looked up and saw pictures of former Braves and settled in to watch "Chipper" Jones play his first game since off-season surgery.

The aging third baseman is the last vestige of a Brave team that had a lot of similarities to this year's Phillies team.

It's March.

That means the Madness can't be too far away.

Everyone from the college basketball fanatic to the bingo-addict with an extra $5 in her purse knows the office pools are just a little over a week away.

Yes. It's that time of the year.

The time when just about every company in America from the mom and pop family owned business to the corporate giant with thousands of employees will have some type of office pool being circulated.

The regular season and league playoffs are in the book, pigtail round games have been played ... now it's time for the fun to begin when the district 11 basketball playoffs get into full swing tonight.

This has always been my favorite time of year. It brings back memories of three straight Class B championship in 1967, '68 and '69 back at Panther Valley High School. It was a little tougher back then because unless you were a league champion, you didn't have a shot at a district title.

After having played the sport of basketball for nearly 16 years, covered it with the TIMES NEWS for six and coached it at Pleasant Valley for four, I have come to realize something about today's high school/middle school style of play.

The man-to-man defense, which used to be the only way to play defense, is unfortunately becoming phased out of game.

I never really noticed it until last year as Matt Gould and I coached our respective seventh and eighth grade basketball teams. Since then it has only become more and more apparent to us.

Believe it or not, according to the Las Vegas odds makers, the Pittsburgh Steelers are actually the "underdogs" in the Super Bowl.

The Green Bay Packers are favored by 2.5 points in Super Bowl XLV.

I can guarentee that every single "Terrible Towel" holder out there throughout the TN coverage area and beyond is simply in disbelief right now.

I'm shocked by those odds because the Steelers own a good portion of Super Bowl history.
