BY MIKE FEIFEL

The end of the baseball and beginning of NFL seasons have been remarkable, and sometimes, not for the best reasons.

Rather than beating the negatives like the 'replacement referee' debacle to do death, I would like to focus on a couple of people – a pair of innovators – that really are the ones responsible for this excitement.

The two are Steve Sabol and, yes – dare I say Bud Selig.

As far as losses go, Friday night's 49-48 overtime heartbreaker against Panther Valley would probably have to rank among one of the toughest in Jim Thorpe coach Mark Rosenberger's career.

Anytime a team losses by a point in overtime, there are dozens of plays that a coach can replay over and over in his head that might have changed the outcome.

RON GOWER/TIMES NEWS Lehighton coaches T.J. O'Connor and Terry Haberman will be part of the "Match with a Meaning" for Hodgkins Lymphoma this year.

Over the next few weeks, volleyball fans will see a number of their school teams sporting different colors.

Lehighton, Marian and Panther Valley girls' volleyball teams will decorate their gyms, sell shirts or wear either violet or pink during special home games in the hopes of raising awareness for cancer prevention and treatments.

Lehighton will kick things off on Thursday evening with "Match with a Meaning," when they face off against Pocono Mountain East.

Zoloft is one of the many drugs to battle depression. As it does, it can also create, according to the Nurses Drug Guide, 55 adverse side effects, including chest pain, blurred vision, loss of hair, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, paranoia, and suicidal thoughts.

Oh, and males can develop breasts and lose sexual function.

When I interview Northern Lehigh football players after games, the process is always the same.

The first thing they do is try to wipe their wet, dirty hands off on their muddy uniform. Then they give a firm hand shake and always address me as sir or Mr. Haines. Then I try to wipe off my now-muddy hand, but usually walk away with a dirty notebook and smears on my tape recorder.

Well, that's what it used to be like. This year, I'm sure the players will still call me sir or Mr. Haines. But the mud will be gone.

Picture a wise old yogi with a flowing white beard in a flowing white robe. A hermit who meditates high on a remote mountain and only reveals the secrets of the universe to truth seekers serious enough to make the ascent.

Now picture his knees bent and arms raised for balance, one foot forward, a wild look in his eyes. His bare feet on a surfboard and the surfboard atop the crest of a frothing wave.

I saw such an image on a poster more than 30 years ago. I'll never forget it, probably because the caption contained such good advice.

Matt McGloin answered questions in a more relaxed manner than he did last year at Penn State's Annual Media Day before the start of the season.

Joe Paterno never named a starter last season, letting both McGloin and Rob Bolden take first-team snaps in practice every week. Even though McGloin had better statistics and higher scoring rates, Bolden started the first six games of the season.

Not this year.

Pre season football practice begins Monday for the 2012 Nittany Lions and there will be some familiar faces missing.

All of the natural born world has heard about PSU's star tailback Silas Redd transferring to USC, which in turn affects the Nittany Lions depth immensely at the running back spot. Other Nittany Lions have also decided to depart totaling eight in all, that will also affect the depth at certain positions. Let's take a look at who has left, who is still rumored to leave, and what the 2012 Nittany Lions roster might look like going into pre season practice come monday.

Baseball exposure in the Carbon County and Schuylkill County area has always been somewhat of a problem for kids looking to advance to the next level.

The Pyramid Sports Performance Center, based in Lehighton, is trying to solve that very issue.

Since opening their doors to the public earlier this year the Pyramid has offered a variety of programs to try and improve the sports performance of area athletes. The Pyramid has had clinics in wrestling, field hockey, and football and is now venturing out to try and improve those who love America's Pastime.

When the topic turns to food, the objective is often simple: to cite studies (and possibly personal experience) to get you to consume less of something.

A column printed nearly 12 years ago, for example, urged you not to drink any soda. That's because a study using Massachusetts middle schoolers published in The Lancet, England's prestigious medical journal, found that the kids' odds of becoming obese increased with every daily serving of a sugar-sweetened drink.
