NL teacher faces child porn charges

A teacher in the Northern Lehigh School District faces charges of child pornography.

Jonathan DeFrain, 37, of the 300 block of Spruce Street, Walnutport, is charged with counts of sexual abuse of children, as well as counts of criminal use of communication facility and possession of obscene and other sexual materials and performances.DeFrain is a social studies teacher at Northern Lehigh High School.According to the affidavit of probable cause filed by trooper Patrick Dawe of the Pennsylvania State Police Department:Police received a report that several files, perceived as child pornography, were sent over yahoo.com.Social media sites and Cloud services are required by law to send notification if they discover that one of their customers is sending or receiving child pornography.At 11:35 a.m. Aug. 3, Dawe went to DeFrain's residence and explained why he was there to see him.DeFrain immediately admitted to downloading, possessing and distributing child pornography, and voluntarily went up to his guest room and retrieved a laptop computer and two thumb drives that all contained child pornography.Dawe seized five items from DeFrain's residence, at least three of which contained images of child pornography.Contacted this morning, Northern Lehigh School District Interim Superintendent Jack Corby declined to comment on DeFrain's status as a teacher in the district.However, Corby shared a news release from the district that reads as follows:"On Saturday, Aug. 5, 2017, the Northern Lehigh School District was made aware of alleged incidents involving a teacher who is currently employed by the school district. We are currently working cooperatively with law enforcement agencies involving these matters. Even though the police investigation of the allegations is ongoing, the district will be taking any and all appropriate steps necessary. Please be assured that the district's paramount goal of ensuring student and staff safety will always be our number one priority."DeFrain is scheduled to have a preliminary hearing at 10 a.m. Oct. 4 before District Judge Robert Hawke of Northampton.He was released after posting 10 percent of $40,000 bail.
